Join us for two great presentations, on intellectual property in private international law, and the role of punishment in criminal Law:

"Conflict of Jurisdictions Rules in Intellectual Property Matters: a Cyber-Tort Perspective"

Manon Fellrath

Ph.D. Candidate and Lecturer at University of Neuchâtel, Switzerland
Visiting Scholar at Columbia Law School

The growing problem of online counterfeiting raises new questions regarding the enforcement of intellectual property (IP) rights, especially regarding the exercise of jurisdiction in private international law. The speaker examines the different approaches that courts in the European Union and the United States take toward the question, whether a court may assert jurisdiction when an infringing content is accessible online in that country.

“Reformist Reflections on Criminal Law”

Shlomo Friedlander

Judge, District Court of Beer-Sheva, Israel
Visiting Scholar at Columbia Law School

The speaker will trace the role of punishment in shaping material and procedural Criminal Law. He suggests relieving the tension between the concern for defending the public against crime and the concern for defending citizen's liberties by replacing retributive justice for administrative prevention.
