SUMMARY:Introduction to Islamic Finance
DESCRIPTION:The Middle Eastern Law Students Association is proud to host Andrew Metcalf, a partner in Islamic Finance at King & Spalding (http\://www.kslaw.com/people/andrew-metcalf), who will give a brief introduction to the fundamental concepts underlying Islamic Finance. The lecture will then use the controversy surrounding Goldman Sachs' issuance of Sharia compliant bonds called sukuk to explore some of the current difficulties faced by the Islamic Finance industry as it expands from a regional or niche market to a major source of investment capital worldwide. No prior knowledge of Islamic Finance or Law is necessary to understand the lecture. Anyone interested in international finance should attend as Islamic Finance is a rapidly growing segment of global capital markets particularly in Asia, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. Co-sponsored by the Columbia Business & Law Association.A delicious non-pizza lunch will be served.Contact\: Tim Doherty, tsd2113@columbia.edu
