Summer Law Institute

Teaming up for the 21st Century Law School

Columbia Law School has created an innovative new experiential learning program exclusively for students and new graduates called the Summer Law Institute. The program is designed to allow qualified students to work closely with faculty members in analyzing complex legal problems and real-world issues leading to research and policy recommendations.

Project-based learning creates an alternative to conventional classroom settings by actively involving students in the analysis of complex legal problems as well as real world issues, and, where appropriate, in the development of policy solutions.  It also encourages teamwork and offers an opportunity for other forms of experimental learning that may help engender the transformation of legal teaching and research in the longer term.

The goal of these projects is to foster student-centered, project-based learning outside the conventional classroom setting, with close supervision and interaction.

This unique program demonstrates the Law School’s longstanding commitment to provide its students with challenging and rewarding academic opportunities combined with practical experience that prepares them for the future.
